A few notes are enough
Bring a list of products, medicines, symptoms and questions. MedlinePlus recommends listing medicines and supplements, describing symptoms and preparing the questions you want answered. An honest account helps the clinician understand what support you need.
- Your product names and label photos; include anything else you use.
- Your usual pattern, how long it has been part of your life and recent changes.
- What happens when you delay or miss it, and what previous attempts to stop were like.
- Prescription medicines, supplements, allergies and important health conditions.
- Pain, sleep, mood or other concerns you want addressed alongside substance use.
Say what matters most
Try finishing this sentence: ‘The hardest part right now is ____, and I want help with ____.’ Then tell the team about real constraints such as work, caring responsibilities, transport, privacy or cost.
If you would like a trusted person to join, ask how that works. For an online visit, confirm that the provider can see people in your state and ask what technology or identity documents it needs.
Leave with a plan you understand
Write down the recommended next step, who will arrange it and how to reach the team with questions. Ask for written instructions. Clarify what to do before the appointment rather than changing products or medicines to prepare on your own.
If a sales or admissions team cannot answer a clinical question, ask when you can discuss it with the clinician responsible for your care.
